01Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter and flour an 8- or 9-inch round baking pan.
02Melt the 4 tablespoons butter and the chocolate together in the top of a double boiler. Stir until smooth. Mix the flour, salt and baking soda together.
03Beat the egg and sugar together until the mixture is very light and falls in a ribbon when the beater is lifted. Stir in the melted butter and chocolate while they are still hot.
04Stir in the flour mixture alternately with the milk. Stir in the vanilla.
