01Oven: 350 deg F/ 180 deg Celsius.
02Butter a small bread pan.
03Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
04Add eggs one by one, and beat well after each addition Stir in the grated lemon rind, sour cream and vanilla.

05Sift together the flour, baking powder and salt, then stir into the wet mixture.

06Mix gently but well, then ladle into the greased bread tin.

07Bake 45 - 55 mins, or until a skewer inserted comes out clean. Take out, and turn out on to a rack or grid.

08Syrup: While bread bakes, put the 3 ingredients for the syrup into a heavy-bottomed pot, and heat to boiling while stirring now and then.

09Boil for about 5 minutes, or until slightly thickened.

10Pour the hot syrup over the bread.

11Cool bread. Serve in slices. Lovely with fresh filter coffee!
