Ingredients (9)

1 tablespoon yeastyeast
1/4 cup waterwater
2 1/2 cups flourflour
1 teaspoon baking powderbaking-powder
1/2 teaspoon baking sodabaking-soda
1 teaspoon saltsalt
2 tablespoons sugarsugar
1/2 cup shorteningshortening
1 cup buttermilk (OR 1 cup milk, soured with 1 tbsp vinegar added)milk

Instructions (9 steps)

01Dissolve yeast in water, set aside.
02Mix dry ingredients in order given; cut in shortening until the size of small Lima beans.
03Stir in buttermilk and yeast mixture.
04Cover bowl with towel and let sit until ready to use. (At least 1 hour, but it is fine if it sits for a couple hours.) Dough will be very sticky.
05Scrape out onto well floured board.
