01Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
02In a mixer combine butter, shortening and sugars. Mix until fluffy, add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Add vanilla and mix. Set aside.
03In a small bowl combine flour, salt, soda and cocoa powder and mix thoroughly. Stir this into the butter mixture 3/4 cups at a time, mixing well after each addition and stopping to scrape sides as needed. When mixed thoroughly add in chocolate chips and nuts (if desired).
